Slam Poetry - The Man Who Scoffed

To the man who scoffed at me in the parking lot when I was dropping my daughter off
Because I pulled up too close too early twenty seconds of your life I stole from you so you scoff
And gesture and show me your aggression so I back up
I back up in the middle of the elementary school parking lot violating the rules they got to keep people safe because you’re frustrated with my existence and you scoff like I’m delinquent it reminds me of all the times my dad scoffed
To the man in the parking lot who scoffed at me when I was dropping my daughter off
It was early my eyes were fuzzy my brain was flipping through all the duties ahead and I wasn’t up all night last night but it was pretty damn late so when I wake up to your hate I want to bend and break so that I don’t have to face my mistake of existing its so burdensome to you for me to screw you out of your 20 seconds you needed to get ahead
To the man who scoffed at me in the parking lot when I was dropping my daughter off
And the man who fooled me into the overpriced car I bought
And the man who is perturbed by my resting face and reminds me to smile even though I’m in the weeds
And the men who can’t understand what no means
And the man who skipped ahead of me in line in the grocery store even though my cart was low and my kids were acting out
Why do you take up so much space so that when I try to breathe it feels like I suffocate
Why do you ignore my humanhood in your pursuit of satiating some trivial primal disease
Why do I instinctively back up, back down, take up less space, make myself smaller, apologize for getting in your way

No more.
