October 28. 2018 Organizational Behaviour Discussion Post 8

There are many advantages to a strong organizational culture, such as:
  • Coordination; overarching values and assumptions facilitate effective communication; lots of cross-learning; decentralization; team orientation.
  • Conflict resolution: sharing core values is a powerful mechanism in conflict resolution.
  • Financial success: strong culture supports financial success when the culture supports the mission, strategy, and goals of the organization.
There are also some disadvantages to a strong organizational culture, such as:
  • Resistance to change; can damage a firm’s ability to innovate.
  • Culture clash; corporate civil war during mergers.
  • Pathology; some cultures based on infighting, secrecy, paranoia (ex: Enron and “cheating culture”)
Socialization is key to culture. To form a strong organizational culture, managers must provide opportunities for applicants and newcomers to become well socialized within the organization. Realistic job previews, employee orientation programs, and institutionalized socialization are techniques used to build organizational culture, and to reinforce its strength, managers must achieve good PJ, PO and PG fit, through layered, leveled interview processes and employee integration programs. When members share strong, common values, beliefs, goals and attitudes, organizational culture is strengthened.
