Some people are inherently charismatic, extroverted, attention-seeking and/or risk-taking. Many of the personality/cognitive characteristics that define strong leadership seem to come naturally to some people, such as intelligence, drive, and self-confidence. It is true that some personalities and individuals may fare better in a leadership position simply based on their traits, but it takes a lot more than traits to be an effective leader in business. That is to say, traits alone are not enough. Similar to how a great baseball player not only needs a well-practiced swing but without a love for the game and strong team spirit they may never make that home run! It is the combination of nature and nurture that provides great leaders with the qualities necessary to motivate, encourage, empower, educate and lead groups or teams to organizational goals and beyond.
In order for organizations to recruit effective, productive and profitable leaders, they must select people that have a balanced array of interpersonal and professional skills/characteristics. It is important for organizations not to fall victim to perceptual biases and stereotypes, as white male candidates who may appear to be the best fit may actually be out-performed by their overlooked female counterparts. Characteristics associated with leadership, such as assertiveness, dominance, and confidence, tend to be considered masculine features and therefore our perceptions of what a real leader is can be skewed by these schemas. It’s important for any organization hiring for leadership positions to learn about these biases so they do not fall victim to them.
As important as it is for leaders to be enthusiastic and charismatic, it is equally important for them to have a strong understanding of their organization. You can turn aspiring, competent and capable leader-hopefuls into influential, powerful and profitable company leaders through training programs, leadership experience and mentoring. In every natural born leader is a seed of capability waiting to be nourished, and when those with that capacity receive that nourishment, great leaders are born!
